Prem Aware School Award
We are proud to be the first school in North Wales which holds this award. In December 2024 we were awarded the Prem Aware School Award through the charity The Smallest Things.
This award will help school to have a better understanding of the challenges children who were born prematurely might have as they start their school journey. This will also help us to support the families too as they take the next big step on their journey. It is always a big step starting school however for the children who were born prematurely, this might be a day that parents could never let themselves dream would happen during those scary days, weeks and months in the neonatal units.
As a school we now include birth information as part of the registration details and invite parents in to school to share their birth stories. We will be holding regular coffee shops and events to support parents and for them to gain support from each other.
Through the charity we have learnt that "On average, two to three children in every classroom may have been born prematurely. Research tells us these children are more likely to struggle academically and need extra support" (The Smallest Things Website).
Here at Y Foryd we believe that early intervention for children gives them the best start on their school journey. By working closely with parents and outside agencies who are supporting the children such as physio, speech and language, dietician etc. we can ensure they are getting all that they need to make progress.
